We all have adversity in our lives. How we manage ourselves in the midst of such turbulence is the critical factor. 'Fight or flight' generally occurs when our security and peace of mind are at risk. 'Fight or flight' is an instinctual reaction, based on thousands and thousands of years surviving in the natural world. In this day and age, and geographical locale, much of our adversity may easily be coined as 'first world problems'. This does not diminish the experience of the one facing the difficulty. And our instinctual nature does not distinguish from literal survival versus 'first world' issues. We do that with our abstracting brains. In a sense, making mountains out of molehills.
So often I see individuals bumped off of what they thought was a stable place when adversity and turmoil enters their reality. From focus to distraction. From strength to fear. From competence to confusion.
It needn't be that way. It is entirely possible to stay grounded, aligned, and focused in the face of whatever adversity comes our way. The first thing one must do when we find ourselves shifting into reactive mode is to learn to pause, and step back from the perceived threat. Often times this is enough to re-calibrate. Yet, it may not be enough. This is when it becomes important to set yourself up for those circumstances when adversity threatens to overwhelm you. May I offer a mantra?
If you'd like to be more effectively prepared for when the proverbial sh#t hits the fan, start citing this to yourself throughout your day. If you're into tapping (EFT technique), this works well - "I move through adversity with a Calm Vigilance. I move through adversity with a Calm Vigilance".
This will not take away adversity, yet it may render you to remain in your effectiveness in the throes of the inevitable turbulence...
